About the trail
Beginning on the misty Fanal plateau, famous for its gnarled, centuries-old til trees, this levada carries water through some of Madeira's oldest laurel forest down toward Ribeira da Janela. Fog drifting between moss-draped trunks gives the route an almost fairy-tale atmosphere; the wet, uneven footing keeps it moderate.
